Getting married in Bozen: vineyards, castles and South Tyrol's warmest city

Bozen sits in the broad valley basin where the Eisack, Talfer and Adige rivers meet – ringed by the vineyards of the Überetsch, the porphyry cliffs of the Ritten, and the Dolomite peaks of the Rosengarten on the horizon. It is South Tyrol's warmest city: outdoor weddings plan well here from April into October, with long, mild evenings.

From my base in Naturns I reach Bozen in about 40 minutes. I know the routes between the arcaded old town and Walther Square, the manor houses and wineries of the Überetsch – Eppan, Kaltern, Girlan – and the Ritten cable car, which climbs from the city to the sunny high plateau in a few minutes.

Bozen is bilingual – a large share of weddings here run in Italian or a mix. I photograph and communicate in German, Italian and English, which makes coordinating with the couple, the family and the celebrant noticeably easier.

Popular ceremony spots: Maretsch Castle in the city centre, Korb Castle and Freudenstein Castle near Eppan, the Haselburg above town, Muri-Gries Abbey, or a winery in the Überetsch for a symbolic ceremony. Civil ceremonies usually take place at Palais Campofranco or the town hall.

I work in a documentary style – no staged scenes, just real moments: the drinks reception under the arcades, the couple shoot between the vine rows in evening light, the view of the Rosengarten glowing red at sunset ("Enrosadira"). A one-person operation with no team, photo and film from the same hand, with an ENAC drone licence for aerial shots over the vineyards.
