Getting married on Lake Garda: olive groves, lemon gardens and Mediterranean light

On the northern shore of Lake Garda the mountains are still close – the cliffs of Monte Baldo drop almost sheer into the water. Further south it turns Mediterranean: olive groves, cypresses, lemon gardens, warm stone towns like Malcesine, Torri del Benaco and Sirmione. The season for outdoor weddings is longer here than in South Tyrol – April into October, with long, soft evening light over the lake.

From South Tyrol I reach the northern shore of Lake Garda in about an hour and a half – on the motorway through Trentino, past Rovereto and Riva del Garda. For couples who live in South Tyrol or want to split their celebration between the mountains and the lake, it's a manageable drive; travel is included in the wedding package.

Popular ceremony spots are the Scaligero Castle in Malcesine high above the water, the cypress avenue and the small church at Punta San Vigilio, historic villas with lake access, or an olive grove in the hills behind the shore. On Lake Garda much of the celebrating happens in Italian and English – I work and communicate in German, Italian and English.

I shoot in a documentary style – I capture what happens rather than staging it: the boat transfer across the lake, the laughter in the olive grove, the jump into the water after the party. A one-person operation with no team, with a Nikon Z6 III and Blackmagic cinema cameras, photo and film from one hand, with an ENAC drone licence for Italy and the EU for aerial shots over the lake, where permitted.

For guests travelling from abroad, Lake Garda is easy to reach: the nearest airports are Verona (about 1 hour) and Bergamo (about 1.5 hours); guests from southern Germany or Austria can also arrive via Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass. Many couples plan a whole wedding weekend – arrival on Friday, ceremony on Saturday, brunch together on Sunday – and I'm glad to be on site for several days.

FAQ

Good to know

Do you really travel from South Tyrol for a wedding on Lake Garda?

Yes, gladly. From South Tyrol I reach the northern shore of the lake in about an hour and a half. Travel is included in the wedding package; for a longer distance or an overnight stay we set that out clearly in the offer.

What language do you work in on Lake Garda?

German, Italian and English. Many international couples marry on Lake Garda – multilingual coordination with you, your guests and the planner runs smoothly as a result.

Which spots on the lake do you know for the ceremony and celebration?

Mainly on the northern and eastern shores: the Scaligero Castle in Malcesine, Punta San Vigilio, Torri del Benaco, Isola del Garda, historic villas with lake access and olive groves in the hills. Further south, Sirmione is a well-known setting. I'm happy to advise on the choice.

What's the easiest way for our guests to get to Lake Garda?

For international guests, the nearest airports are Verona (about 1 hour) and Bergamo (about 1.5 hours). From southern Germany and Austria, travelling via Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass also works well.

Do you need a boat for a celebration on Isola del Garda?

Yes, Isola del Garda is a private island reachable only by boat – usually via a transfer organised by the venue. This often produces the most beautiful arrival photos of the whole day.

When is the light on Lake Garda best?

Lake Garda gives long, warm evenings – the hour before sunset over the water is ideal for the couple shoot. On the northern shore it can be windy morning and evening, which for lively images is often a plus.

Do we get photos and the wedding film from one person?

Yes. In the "Complete Story" package I photograph and film the same day – one point of contact, one consistent look. Details on both packages are on the main Wedding page.
