Getting married at Schloss Freudenstein in Eppan

Schloss Freudenstein sits in the vineyards above Eppan on the Wine Road, a few kilometres from Bolzano. For a wedding the castle offers a great deal in one place: extensive parkland, an orangery, historic banqueting halls, a courtyard and a panoramic terrace with views of the valley and the mountains.

For you as a couple this means short distances and many different backdrops, without leaving your guests alone for long. If you wish, you can book the entire castle exclusively and stay overnight with your guests in the ten suites. That lets me photograph the morning preparations right at the castle.

I am with you all day, from getting ready and the ceremony to the party, with a wedding film and drone footage if you like. The images above are from weddings across South Tyrol.

Schloss Freudenstein: history and location

According to the castle, its history begins in the 13th century with two residential towers on a hill in Eppan. In the early 16th century the knight Jakob Fuchs von Fuchsberg had the double castle rebuilt into the present Schloss. Today Freudenstein is a hotel and event venue with its own restaurant.

• Park and Mediterranean garden – Lots of green and soft light under the trees, the first choice for couple portraits.
• Castle walls and courtyard – Stone and ivy as a backdrop, good for group photos and the reception.
• Panoramic terrace – Views of the valley and the mountains, at their best in the evening light.
• Orangery and banqueting halls – For dinner and dancing, and at the same time the fallback for portraits when it rains.

My tips for your wedding photos at Schloss Freudenstein

• Time for portraits – Allow 30 minutes for just the two of you, ideally in the hour before sunset. That is when the light in the park and on the terrace is softest.
• Getting ready at the castle – If you stay at the castle, I start during getting ready. These images are often among the most personal of the day.
• Rain – We then shoot in the orangery and the banqueting halls.
