Getting married in Brixen: a bishop's city, cloister courtyards and the Dolomites of Villnöss

Brixen is the oldest town in Tyrol and was a bishop's seat for centuries. That still shapes the setting: the baroque cathedral with its medieval cloister, the prince-bishops' palace, the arcaded old town. Around the city the Eisack valley opens up – and a few kilometres on, in Villnöss, the Geisler peaks form one of the most famous Dolomite skylines of all.

From Naturns I reach Brixen in about an hour. I know the route from Cathedral Square and the cloister to Neustift Abbey with its monastery winery, and on up into the Villnöss valley and to Säben Abbey, perched on a cliff above Klausen.

Popular ceremony spots are Brixen Cathedral and the cloister, the abbey church at Neustift, the parish church of St. Magdalena, or St. John in Ranui in Villnöss – the little church seen on almost every Dolomites postcard. For symbolic ceremonies the cloister courtyards, an Eisack-valley winery or an alpine meadow facing the Geisler peaks all work well.

I shoot in a documentary, unobtrusive way – which matters especially in churches and monasteries: working quietly, no barrage of flash, an eye for the moment in the soft light of the cloister. A one-person operation with no team, with a Nikon Z6 III and Blackmagic cinema cameras, photo and film from one hand. Drone footage over the cloister courtyards or the Villnöss valley is possible with an ENAC licence for Italy and the EU, where the rules allow.

• Kloster Säben, Klausen – Former monastery on a cliff above Klausen – a steep approach, rewarded with a wide view over the Eisack valley.
